Das Kinderbuch „Alice Im Wunderland" von Lewis Carroll lieferte den Namen für dieses Krankheitsbild.
Das "Alice-im-Wunderland-Syndrom" tritt meist als Begleiterscheinung einer Migräneattacke oder eines epileptischen Anfalls auf und führt zu einer veränderten Wahrnehmung der Umgebung. Ähnlich wie bei Alice, wenn sie von einem Zauberpilz isst und infolgedessen schrumpft oder zu einem Riesen heranwächst, erscheinen den Betroffenen plötzlich Gegenstände verkleinert oder vergrößert und sie beginnen, phantastische Bilder zu sehen.
